That Google would go after this new business surprises only those that don't understand Google. Industrial-era thinkers believe you should "stick to your focus". Like GM. But Google knows that in an information economy if you don't keep moving into new markets with new technologies looking for more revenues you won't survive.
Web OSes are the future, and I am surprised Google is the only one making serious steps towards that direction.

I think with Google Native Client support the browser can run every app you fancy.(in the long run)

Not sure if you want to .. but if you aren't a hardcore free software guy it shouldn't be a problem if done right.

himanshu: I don't think anyone has ever done it very well. All the linux distributions I have ever tried are packed FULL of things I will never ever use and when I try and do a minimal install. . . you end up in dependency hell just to install the basics. So then you have to hunt around for a minimal but functional distro that gets close. For me its Linux Mint but. . . even with that I spent ages removing things I'd never use.

I'm kind of excited by this.

Eugenia: I don't really see there being any problem with video editing. I doubt you will have to upload all your un-compressed videos to the internet before you could edit. They'd just sit on your Raid plugged into that computer. So the app would be in the "cloud" but it would have to use your local CPU and GPU for the edit itself.

For 3D apps. . . this has a LOT of potential. Especially for hard core artists that use procedural textures and Sub-D geometry. Very tiny on the file sizes. Perfect for the "Cloud Computing" world.

Stick "Google" label on any crap, and people consider it a work of art :)

its just a barebone os to run a browser. What's so special about about it ? It's been done a thousand times by noname programmers... :)

and they are prob dropping x window system in favor of custom windowing library... let's see how people react to this webos...
