"Apparently, the secret was to show some interest for sports, that was the only way to get some respect out of him."

Most teachers aren't as mean as the one you describe, but even in academic subjects, I think most of them teach better when the students are interested.

Yes, it was in Greece but had nothing to do with Sparta, but with a disturbed individual.

Sounds like he subscribed to the Spartan school of thought. I'm assuming this was in Greece after all.

When you watch the extras on the Mr. Woodcock DVD it goes into the history of physical education. How it was based on military training etc. Tear them down and then build them back up. Very interesting stuff. I guess they missed that in Australia. Our teachers were all about making it fun.

I too have experience of two odd gym teachers. One of them used to call me names and insult me all the time in front of the whole class, that did really hurt, made my self-esteem pretty low, and soon I just completely refused to go to gym classes, or even skipped whole school days.. It was my mom at the time who then contacted the head teacher (or whatever it is in english, I can't remember) and complained about the gym teacher's behaviour.

The other teacher didn't teach me, he taught the guys. Anyway, he was always drunk at school and even passed out during the classes a few times. Didn't get long for him to get fired :)

Being a teacher myself, I 'm very jealous of sports teachers. In Belgium, like me, they must teach 21 hours per week, but they NEVER have to grade homeworks and exams, and they get the same wages at the end of the month...
