>Does this mean we can sue them too, for damages?

Maybe you can. Not your government, but maybe the US government, as that's the one that's more resisting in the idea of global warming. Until you read the US law, don't say that something is silly and can't be hold in court.

The one thing I've noticed is that a few years ago the winters were pretty cold here in Finland. The temperature could drop even below -30C. But last year the winter was already pretty warm, this year the coldest we've gotten here has been -6C! That's just plain HUGE difference. Sure, it's nice to have warmer winter, but that's not the point..the point is that atleast here it is really very evident that global warming is a fact, not fiction.

What a bunch of nonsense. Assuming we are indeed the cause of climate change, then we are ALL responsible for this. As if the people in that village did not use oil, cars, electricity, etc. etc.

The Netherlands will have to invest billions into strengthening our costal and river defenses. Does this mean we can sue them too, for damages?

Energy companies in the US are far too powerful for this lawsuit to go very far. Alaska's residents receive annual payments from oil and coal companies in exchange for the rights to rape the land. Yup. Good 'ol USA. And the high courts seem to be ... 'high'? I remember listening to a supreme court justice's ruling (I don't remember which judge was speaking or on what case) in which she stated the following fallacy:

"...the primary driving force behind all scientific progress is economic incentives and profit..."

It's hard for me to begin to say how demonic this idea is. Don't tell me that children want to become doctors, firemen, and teachers for the economic incentives - they want to do those things because they haven't been evilized yet. Dear god, what horrible sort of child would want to help sick people??

Jonas Salk did NOT cure polio for the cash, I assure you. His words were: "Who owns my polio vaccine? The people! Could you patent the sun?", well if you found a clever enough lawyer - yes, sadly you could. And lawyers will probably win this Alaska case as well. The criminal senator of Alaska - Ted Stevens (of 'bridge to nowhere' fame) is under federal investigation, but he's probably going to pay some investigators and get off scot free. There's just waaaay too much money in the coffers of ExxonMobil for them to lose, and don't forget they're still fighting against penalties for the massive spill in 1989 - despite the fact that it would cost only three weeks of profit (F_CKING PROFIT!!!)...

But despite my dire outlook, I support their effort (at least in spirit). However, for this case to have any real muscle - they would need the entire state of Alaska's residents with them (which isn't likely). Perhaps in the future, many towns and villages possibly even cities - could join together and file a unified criminal action suit for pollution, overcharging, political corruption, etc. But this one little town, I'm sorry to say, will still have to move.

Nah, won't change a thing. Most likely they will not win the suit anyway. And heck, it's not only the big companies which are responsible, it's all of us actually. For example, do YOU use energy-saving lightbulbs at home..? Do you needlessly leave eletrical appliances turned on? Do you leave the lights turned on even when you are not coming back to the room in a while? All of those consume lots of energy, then multiplied by millions of people and it's no wonder that energy companies have trouble lessening their greenhouse gas emissions when they still have to supply huge amounts of needless energy.
