It is funny thing, my mom was a dress designer that loved to go nude around the house and dressing was like a religious ritual and so my sister who turned 57 yesturday and still looks great and I have no qualms about nudity, it was not a big deal and our doctor father really loved the human body, the fact is most houses are not like mine growing up and I raised 3 girls but I never was as free about nudity as my parents were, just to make my daughters comfortable, anyway I think that nudity is attractive element for TV and that they gain audience by doing so and think the answer is the market place, if there was less stress about being naked on tv on on the beach, I think the market place would sort it out, if the USA turns off shows with nudity or turns it on, that will be the deciding factor.

It is funny how they always were saying that U.S. of A. is not a Communist dictatorship, but rather a democracy and a Land of Free. Those who haven't been to a Communist country would be shocked after finding out how the systems are/were alike (well, aside of free enterprise system).

The FCC is a bunch of fascist anyway. Most Americans are against them. A very small, but vocal minority does all the complaining. The rules only apply to anything broadcast over the air, like radio and tv, but not to anything on cable or satellite.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. I saw my dad nude accidentally the first time when I was about 5 and I thought nothing of it and couldn't understand why he was in such a hurry to rush me out of the bathroom. I wasn't traumatized, shocked, corrupted, etc. I can't vouch for Dad though.

Seems someone out there either had nothing better to do or was a tad paranoid. We got a full-length back view of David Caruso coming out of the shower on NYPD Blue back in the 90s and no one had kittens. I quite enjoyed it. There were also quite a few scenes with female rears being bounced about or stroked by him and as they were a logical part of the scene/story line, it was no big deal.

Of course, one wonders why a country with a First Amendment has a regulatory agency named "Federal Communications Commission" in the first place.

I was watching The Colbert Report a few days ago and Leonard Nimoy was the guest (yes, Spock). He was on the show to promote his new photo book which subject matter was 'larger-than-average' nude women taking poses from classical paintings. He made an excellent point that his book would be a very positive message to American girls (especially 'larger' girls) to show them that they are still beautiful even though TV and society in general cast female role models as unrealistically skinny. It wasn't pornographic, but they still had to 'black-box' the pictures for TV - do we really need to do this to art? They made fun of this type of thing in the Simposons, but does Michelangelo's David need to wear pants now? The television is not a baby-sitter, if you think YOUR (emphasis on Y-O-U-R) kids are watching someting they shouldn't, do what real parents do - make them go to bed, or do homework, or the millions of other un-fun things parents can come up with, it's not difficult. Be a parent, not a whiny little child..

The thing is, if they allowed gratuitous nudity on broadcast TV, then that's all there would be. Every football team would have topless cheerleaders. In America, we rarely do anything in moderation.

I also think it's a bit over the top to think it has anything to do with religion. It's more about leveling the playing field for women of various ages, etc.

I love the idea that people think something like showing an ass is inappropriate for TV.
I would argue that most tv is inappropraite for minors and espically the material that is so censored and not true to real life that it is actually deemed appropraite.

Take TV adverts and product placement; wake up people, someone showing their ass or gentials is not bad, it's actually natural. Marketing crap to kids is bad! Letting them watch biased and incorrect 'news' is bad.

Lying is bad not asses or swearing!!

- Thanks for having this topic on your blog - this place is a little island of reason in a mad world :)
