At 4% market share I thinks for all intents and purposes, Macs are dead,
My opinion is still out on the HD dvd
format war, in the end I think it is the same with the demise of the Apple, if it too expensive, people will not pop for it. I do think products like Garage band for musicians are a step in the right direction,
but for video editing paying a grand for FCP! when you can have a full version of Sony Vegas for $180
So think the consuming public is interested in value and ease of use and not too interested in eliteism

With Paramount close to switching to Blu-Ray, I think it's definitely the end of HD-DVD. Good thing I decided to wait this format war out. It's still going to be a while until I invest any money into a new format, though.

It's pretty bleak for HD-DVD now, admit it.

I don't think it's over yet. It's not over until one is dead. It's like saying Macs are dead.

BD disks don't cost as much. They are more expensive than DVDs, but not at $35 for a single movie.

I just wonder - if people were offered 2 alternatives: Buying a Blu-Ray disk for $35 plus shipping (and waiting 1-3 weeks to get it) or downloading a 700MB DivX (or h.264) copy for $6 straight away, what would most people choose?

I'm not sure if companies are not getting it or if it's just me who's not realistic. Maybe most people do prefer a costly, inconvenient, environmental unfriendly solution that offers high quality image rather than a cheap, efficient, convenient, environmental friendly one that offers acceptable quality. Go figure.

Ah ok, if you already have an XBoX360, use that to view your own HD footage. :)

Yeah -- hard to justify when we already have a Wii and an XBox 360 (and a PSP and a GBA). My wife already has had a cow over the amount of money I've spent thus far on my new HV20 and Vegas (and all the sundry stuff that goes along with them)

Get a Sony PS3. If you have an HD camcorder, that's the only sane and fast way to view your HD clips anyway. And it couples as an entertainment device and a Blu-Ray player.

Meh -- I'm still gonna wait until the standalone players are at least somewhat affordable.
