I don't think it's just me. People like my brother, who is just an electrician, won't touch a device that doesn't allow third party apps.

I believe there is no place in the market for a PDA-only device, unless is also an iPod -- or a tablet that can replace a laptop.

Regarding the whole SDK thing: whilst I completely respect your position Eugenia, I think this issue is more about your own preferences rather than the real world. A high percentage of people who buy iPones and iPod Touch won't give a rats arse that you can program for it. Indeed, I owned a Palm Pilot Pro and a Hanspring Visor. I coded up a few apps for them, but ultimately, I was more interested in writing desktop apps. I'm a geek. I write code all day long. I write code in my spare time. I do stupid things like learn Objective C for kicks. However, should I own an Apple PDA, I would not feel any urge to extend it. I did that to the nth degree in the 90's with fore mentioned PalmOS devices. I realised after a while, features maketh the device, not third party apps.

I'm thinking of getting a Nokia N800 - should I do so, I'd probably never install any third party apps. The base features are enough. I would buy the device for them, not for extensibility.

I use my PDA every day. Its a Tapwave Zodiac. I play lots of games, Mame, all the emulators (Playing Phantasy Star 4 right now for the Sega Genesis). It holds all my contacts, I manage my time with it. Its got some great movie playing apps like Core Player. I have watched lots of older TV shows on it and "Sling" shows to it from my sisters Tivo.

I think a good PDA rules. I blew two whole days of my life just playing Bejeweld2 on it. :-) Cell phones . . . not so much. Hate when I see people driving with them, I hate them when they ring in movies or at church. The company I'm contracting with right now purchased one for me and I feel like I'm "on call". I have started turning it off on weekends. Much to their frustration.

I don't like this convergence crap. I do not want to pay a monthly fee for the convenience of having a small computer/gaming/time management machine in my pocket.

I'd rather a good knife than a pocket knife with everything in it but isn't so great as a knife.
