RAW support on my Canon A700

Following the Linux.com and Engadget articles I decided to try the features-enabled firmware hack for my Canon A700. The firmware has “locked” features reserved for the pro models, but this little safe hack unlocks them. Among the features unlocked is the ability to shoot RAW. Everyone knows the differences of RAW and JPEG and samples exist for many pro cameras, but here are my own samples from my consumer camera.

If your Canon DIGIC II-based camera is supported, feel free to use the CHDK hack. It doesn’t override your installed firmware so it can’t damage it (at least theoretically).

Raw vs jpeg ? Meh. What about raw vs tiff ?
RAW is good enough (and smaller in filesize), plus most cameras don’t capture TIFF, so it doesn’t matter. It only matters if you want to edit later your RAW pictures with an app that can’t read RAW, in which case you want to be saving to the intermediate .tiff uncompressed. Other than that, RAW will do the job fine.

Darn, I have the Powershot S1. Time to start thinking about an upgrade, I guess.
Eugenia, what is your opinion on, Sony Cyber Shot T-100?
I have none… I don’t really follow much the camera scene. I mostly do so in the camcorder world… However, looking at that model, I don’t take it seriously: no viewfinder, small lens…
