Yeah, the Planet Earth series is the reason why MANY people will end up getting an HD player. I have heard the SAME thing out of 3 engineers so far here in the Valley: “I might get an HD player, just so I can watch Planet Earth”.

However, it’s a bit of a bummer that there isn’t a version that is at 720/60p. Even if the resolution is lower than 1080p, the 60 frames/fields per second would make it even more justice IMO.

Yeah, but I didn’t pay $300. Not even $200. Not even $100.

I have blogged about this issue and I agree with you. DVDs are good enough for me too, even without an upscaling. The only reason we get an HD-DVD is because it’s a review unit and refurbished (*not* new). We don’t have plans to buy HD-DVD disks, we will rent from Netflix instead.

Eh, for the $300 or so for an HD-DVD player I’d buy a PS3 and tell myself “$300 for movies, $300 for games (eventually)”.

Which is why geeks would prefer the Blu-Ray. More exotic.

Why do you think that true geeks have to belong to the blu-ray group? Because of the PS3? Storage ability?

I consider myself a geek, but i don’t belong to the blu-ray group…or the hd-dvd group. Although if I had to choose one, it would be the HD-DVD group due to the lower cost of entry.

I suppose you’re right. I must not be a true geek then

Exotic is secondary to accesibility for me. I’m hesitant to purchase any HD formatted dvd media until a resolution happens or Samsung comes out with a true dual format player (no the LG doesn’t really count, it’s not a true HDDVD player).

I’m an early adapter when it comes to a lot of things but movies. I have over $5,000 in dvd purchases and had almost that much in VHS/Video disc. I’m hesitant to purchase formats until they are proven to be better. I’ve seen HDDVD vs SDDVD comparisons on a 107″ projection and i can’t see a noticable difference. Upscaling does just fine for me at this point. I’d rather spend $200+ on an oppo than even $200 on a new format.
