Only the exterior was rendered. But it is not the exterior we love about Serenity, but the interior. And the Falcon is a big fat zero inside. There was not very much of Maya, Cinema 4D or Lightwave back in these days. And besides this - at least the Episode IV scenes where shot with a lower budget than an average Scifi TV series is shot with today.
