The way I see it from the inside things are quite a bit more complicated. I remember going with my parents to sports games when I was a kid circa 90-95 without any concept of fear.

The current issue lies with imports. Associations that implicitly support hooligans actually strike deals to move them around countries, get them free hotel reservations, liquor, drugs etc. For example the recent Greece-Turkey soccer game was supported by Russians. I also actually know a guy who travels to Italy to burn and break stuff in exchange for simmilar support from fans there.

In a recent raid to such a ’sports’ club the police found a small weighting scale. Obviously trafficking drugs has little to do with sports.

Bottom line, I think this isn’t about sports. It’s people with serious issues that know nothing but doing that and doing it efficiently. They just need an excuse.

It is part of their life I guess. Sports violence exists in Greece since the ’50s, so the newer generation grew up thinking that “this is how it is”.

Is it a cultural thing, or what? I’ve always wondered why such extreme violence is tolerated. Is it more socially acceptable in some countries than others?

Actually, the problem described in the post is between the fans of the teams, not between the players. The players are usually professional in their behavior.

I agree! That’s why I don’t watch Hockey in the U.S. Violence is encouraged as a regular part of the sport. I also want nothing to do with soccer because of what I have seen around the world.

Baseball games are for the most part civil. Even in football, where you have giant people running around smacking each other, have you noticed what control the referees have over players? The players aren’t allowed to mess with the referees - one touch and they are out of the game.

Sportsmanship needs to be taught from the youngest age, and it must be enforced. I remember totally losing interest in Tennis after watching guys like McEnroes run around cussing like big babies. They should have been immediately dismissed from the game. The tennis I have seen lately seems much better. Golf also has a real tradition of civility. Players actually impose penalties on themselves.

Rant over.
