The thing is though, Apple has an industrial design team, while companies like System76 are simply “shop” their laptops in Taiwan or China and have no say in their external look. I’m probably being unrealistic with the 1″ thick. Still, it seems to me that Apple is the only company really trying hard to make hardware that pleases the eye (I say as I type on my 1″ thick Macbook Pro). I would NOT consider this laptop if it didn’t have firewire in it!!! And the reason I want firewire is because it is the ONLY way to connect camcorders for video editing! Maybe you don’t own a camcorder, but myself and millions of other people do! Without a firewire port, you are screwed if you own a camcorder. USB does not work with DV camcorders! Yes, there is an expresscard port there, but a firewire expresscard costs over $30, while the firewire port cost the manufacturer $1. So, given these options, I am VERY glad that this laptop comes with onboard firewire. As for the size, this is a VERY small laptop. It might not be 1″ thick, but it is overall very light. It is lighter than my 12″ Powerbook and much lighter than the current Macbooks. It doesn’t have to be paper thin you know. Weight matters more than thickness, because thickness only pleases the eyes while weight the back that has to carry it. Besides, if it was 1″ thick, there would not be space for the optical drive and express card. This is not a 15.4″ laptop we are talking about where there is enough space to lay down all hardware parts next to each other. Besides, this laptop currently is 1.24″ thick, which is not that bad at all. Honestly, I think your needs are unrealistic regarding THIS kind of laptop at this price range. The only things missing IMHO, because there *is* space to add them would be a line-in, and onboard mic and VGA web cam (both placed on the top of the screen). I guess I could see it, but given that Apple isn’t even fully committed to firewire anymore I would have skipped it if I were them.
