Apple iPhone Coming Soon
Apple’s Oppenheimer said in response to an analyst who asked about the impact of Sony’s music phones and their success. “As regards cell phones, we don’t think that the phones that are available today make the best music players. We think the iPod is. But over time, that is likely to change. And we’re not sitting around doing nothing.”
Except saying “no comment”, this is the only other thing he could say without having Jobs firing him. And it shows that Apple is working on the next generation of multimedia devices that do a lot more, simply because most users want convergence. While some purists want their devices to do one thing and do it well, most common people want to only carry a single item that does it all. It’s just a different lifestyle, I guess. And there’s money to be made so it makes sense for Apple to dive in before other brands establish themselves as multimedia leaders in this specific mobile industry.
Besides, Apple didn’t hire (at least two that I know of, friends of mine) hard-core (and ingenious) kernel engineers with embedded experience on cellphones/PDAs in the iPod division just to write Dashboard Widgets or to maintain the basic needs of the iPod OS. Such guys don’t join a kernel project just so they can make it just playback music and video. And no, these guys don’t talk about what they are working on (in the normal Apple fashion, no one talks), but it doesn’t take a PhD in Newtonian Physics to figure out what they are doing over there every day. ![]()
