Linux laptops and ACPI

Eugenia: I just put my Linux laptop to sleep. Let’s hope it will wake up correctly…
JBQ: Yeah… ‘cause Linux is not putting laptops to sleep… it puts them in a coma. And if they are not IBM laptops, they are likely to be in a Permanent Vegentative State (PVS).

Emachines M2350 and Linux
Sleeps beautifully, never wakes up! It used to sleep and then go through a night-marish resume - all kinds of wierd video problems, file-systems catastophes, etc. Now it just snoozes endlessly until I power it off.
Tom, try what I did and worked — if it’s a gfx issue: add the acpi_sleep=s3_bios kernel parameter in your grub/lilo line.
i have to agree with JBQ’s comment about IBM ACPI support, my thinkpad has a crazy uptime of 26 days now ( that includes my laptop hibernating everynight when the battery is drained and sleeping a few times a day)

Nope, still goes to sleep and never wakes up. I guess it’s just one of those things you live with in the Linux world. I’ve been a regular Linux user since the mid 90’s. When I’m feeling extra bored I’ll look into it, but for now I can live without it. ACPI sure has been a pain in the laptop for me. I has much more sucess back in the old days with APM. Of course. it is better than it used to be. I used to have to turn ACPI off altogether just to boot. What a hot laptop! Eventually, if I recompiled the kernel I could get somewhere. Now, most kernels handle the basic stuff, but hibernate/suspend is still a crap shoot.
